Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, has garnered much attention due to its extraordinary medicinal properties – and as studies are showing, consuming CBD through a vape pen can only add to its use as a medical solution. But to experience all of its potential benefits, you first need to know how to use a vape pen the right way.

In this article, we not only examine the right techniques and steps of how to use a vape pen, but also the anatomy of the vape pen itself and how to choose the best type of CBD extract to vaporize.

What’s the History of CBD Vapes?

While fairly new in the mainstream conversation, vaporizers have been vaping cannabis and it’s extracted forms since the early 1990’s. There’s no exact reference to when the first cannabis vaporizer was created, however, Bill “Eagle” Amato is credited as revolutionizing and bringing popularity to the once obscure consumption method. Amato invented the Eagle Bill Shake & Vape – the first commercially sold portable vaporizer to grace the North American market.

This vaporizer itself was fairly basic, requiring an open flame to produce the heat necessary to vaporize cannabis. While it wasn’t a revolution in modern engineering, it did pave the way for future vapes.

Fast forward to the 21st century, we’re introduced to the first battery powered portable vaporizer. An Irish butane company by the name of Iolite created a portable vaporizer that used purified butane for power. This was later on replaced by lithium ion batteries, as they became the industry standard.

Thanks to these pioneers, we have CBD Vapes in all shapes and sizes. While each has its pros and cons, we’re going to focus on how to use a vape pen, specifically for CBD oil and Isolate.

But to better use a vape pen, we need to understand the parts that make such vaping action take place.

There are 4 main components of a vape pen:

The battery; an atomizer which is the heating element; a chamber that holds the concentrate; and a mouth piece. This, in essence, is how every vape pen is built, the magic formula per se.

Vaporizer pen batteries are going to be made of lithium ion 99% of the time. They hold the best charge, along with being compact and ideal for convenience and portability.

When it comes to charging, there are 2 distinct types of vaporizers, disposable and rechargeable. Disposable CBD vapes are to be discarded once the chamber is empty. Refilling these pens can be an issue as they’re rated for 1 time use. If you want to reuse the pen, we suggest opting for a rechargeable option. Most people use a USB to keep the vaporizer  charged up!

The atomizer and chamber work in conjunction with each other. The heating element will raise the temperature to heat the concentrate in the chamber, therefore producing a silky smooth vapor.

Chambers come in all different shapes and sizes, as well as functions. Not all chambers accept certain types of concentrates and may be designed specifically for oils, while other chambers can use any and all extracts, including CBD Isolate.

Certain CBD vapes will also accept “E-Juice”. This liquid is often used for tank style vaporizers which are commonly associated with nicotine vapes. While CBD E-Juice is available and now more common, it’s suggested to use CBD Oil or Isolate as they’re less likely to contain harmful cutting and vaporizing agents.

Mouth pieces are all relatively the same. Select the one you feel most comfortable with and easiest to clean.

Using a Vape Pen doesn’t require a college or masters degree in engineering. That being said, staying properly informed goes a long way into extending the life of your CBD vape and getting the most out of it in general. Here are the steps of how to use a vape pen.

Step 1) Choose Your Medicine

First, select the type of concentrate you’d like to vaporize. CBD comes in all shapes and forms. However the most common are CBD Isolate, CBD Crumble/Wax and Oil. The most important part in distinguishing between them is their consistency. CBD crumble and wax have a more malleable, almost a play-doh like texture. CBD Isolate is typically found in powder form, and CBD Oil is comparable to light honey in texture.

Choosing the concentrate best suited for your needs and for your vape will alleviate potential headaches down the road. Once you’ve chosen we can move onto loading the pen.

Step 2) Filling the Cartridge

If you have a disposable CBD Vape pen, you can move right onto the next step. For those who are going the rechargeable route, please pay attention. As previously mentioned, not every extract will work for each pen.

With CBD Oil

For pens that require CBD Oil, unscrew the cap off the chamber. You can use either a syringe or you can manually pour out the oil into the chamber – apply enough to fill a quarter to half of the chamber. Make sure you don’t overfill, as it can lead to leaks and potential harm to the battery.

With CBD Isolate

For those using pens that don’t use oil, or are multipurpose, such as having the ability to use oil and solid extracts – it’s best to use only one type of extract per chamber. Most rechargeable vape pens will have interchanging chambers. When using CBD Isolate, place a tiny amount on the coil or in the chamber. CBD Isolate is usually 99% in purity, therefore, smaller amounts are required to achieve its desired effects.

With CBD Wax/Crumble

When handling wax and crumble, it’s best to use a tool, such as a pick to place concentrates in the chamber. Picking up the extracts with our hands can actually biodegrade the product and reduce its effectiveness. By using a smaller amount it’s also much easier to keep the vape clean and reduce the residue build up.

Step 3) Let There be Light

Vaporizers have 2 distinct methods to power on the device. Some require no action at all. While others are turned on by pressing a button 5 times in quick succession, then again 5 times to power off.

Some will come with the option to adjust a heating temperature. This is often done by pressing the button 3 times, rotating between low, medium and high, or just low and high. Play around to see what works best, the vape world is your oyster.

Step 4) Breathe In, Breathe Out

Now for the best part, actually using the vaporizer. It’s very simple – just hold down the power button and inhale at the same time. It’s suggested to use a slow and steady draw, with a shallow inhale.

The vapor is absorbed into our bloodstream rather quickly and doesn’t require to be held in for more than a second. Rinse and repeat until you have reached the desired effects.

These steps are simple, yet critical in how to use a vape pen for cbd consumption.

Routine Maintenance

In taking proper care of your vaporizer, you need to ensure there is no unnecessary residue build up. This guarantees your CBD vape lives a long and healthy life – not to mention, yourself!

If your vaporizer is on the more luxurious end and can be taken apart, do so and clean every removable part with Isopropyl. Ideally, the loading chamber and mouthpiece can be cleaned separately. Certain vaporizers may even have tubes that can be cleaned out.

Purchasing a new chamber and/or atomizer once it starts tasting a little burnt is ideal. Cleaning your vaporizer the right way and on a regular basis will also delay this step, but eventually, you’ll need new parts.
