Its no secret, we live in an increasingly stressful world. Work, school, high prices and low wages have led to an all-time high of stress across most developed nations. With every door closed a window opens though, and many people are now experimenting with CBD to help treat their anxiety.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, chronic stress has increased to 18% of the population. It has fast become the most common form of mental illness in the US, with a similar proportion of people being affected in Canada.

For many people, Cannabis has become synonymous with winding down after a hard day. THC’s legendary relaxing effects are a staple, a comfort for millions of people all over the world. As research into this plant has advanced, we now know of another compound present in Marijuana: Cannabidiol. Otherwise known as CBD, this cannabinoid can induce many of the relaxing qualities found from smoking pot, all without the “high”.

While the research into CBD is still in it’s infancy, initial reports and findings look extremely promising. Finally, a way to enjoy the medical and psychological benefits of Cannabis without experiencing the somewhat debilitating high!

Its no secret, pot can make you paranoid. With advanced growing techniques, and ever-increasing THC levels, this may not be so surprising! For years Cannabis was grown exclusively for the black market, with little to no research going into how exactly it interacted with the brain. Because of this, pot was grown mainly for high THC levels, as CBD was thought to “not do anything” in relation to the desired psychoactive high.

We don’t live in that world anymore. Research is showing that a balanced THC : CBD ratio is VERY important for an enjoyable high! Cannabidiol softens the effects of the high, and balances out the buzz. Those suffering from anxiety should be advised to seek out high CBD strains, or take a concentrated CBD oil daily before smoking. Just taking CBD on its own with no weed whatsoever can provide you with beneficial effects! For some people, being high is either undesirable or not an option, but that doesn’t mean they cannot find benefits from the compounds found within Cannabis.

That’s all well and good, but how does it work? Well, like THC, CBD interacts with something called the “endo-cannabinoid system” which is found in all human beings. This system helps in regulating the bodies natural endorphins and brain chemicals, helping to stabilize mood. CBD has been shown to aid in certain neurotransmitters responsible for the uptake and regulation of something called “serotonin”, which is a chemical in the brain responsible for happiness and managing stress.

Simply put, CBD helps stabilize these levels, leaving its users with an overall sense of well-being and relaxation. It achieves all of this without any high, nasty side effects, or the potential for addiction. CBD has also been shown to help in the maintenance and regeneration of the hippocampus, the region of the brain closely associated with depression and anxiety.

In a 2012 publicatiaon of Pharmaceuticals journal, a survey of 34 studies including human subjects by Simon Zhornitsky and Stéphane Potvin found that CBD showed potential in a number of conditions from social anxiety to bipolar disorder.

“Preliminary clinical trials suggest that high-dose oral CBD (5–30 mg/d) may exert a therapeutic effect for social anxiety disorder, insomnia and epilepsy,”

If you’re thinking of taking CBD for an anxiety condition, most research suggests you should start small, taking between 5 to 10mg a day to see how it interacts with your specific endo-cannabinoid system and taking it from there. Remember, no two brains are alike, and its important to establish your own regiment that works for you!
